The project provided a centre for park management and interpretation, with a restaurant, general store, booking office, and a sheltered public space containing amenities, park information, and walkers’ registration.
The elevated building acts as an entry gateway to the national park and provides the symbolic transition between civilisation and the wilderness. The materials and details of the building reflect the traditions of Tasmanian highland construction.
The form follows the edge of an existing clearing and reinforces the focus of park activity, marsupial congregation, and the best outlook to the lake and mountains beyond.
